My dear brothers and sisters,

On Sunday afternoons, I work in our local community garden. It is a magnificent tract, here in Berkeley. Just now I've been planting potatoes, sunchokes and cucumbers. It is a privilege to work with living plants and vibrant soil.

But it is the people there that matter. They are volunteers from all walks of life. They are welcoming and friendly.

In times such as these we are more distant and remote from one another than ever before. We have been replaced by things; they socialize, they gyrate and dance on the world stage. It is things that cast the long shadows. We've got to get back and begin anew. One small way is to work with brothers and sisters in a community garden. It matters more than we know.

Our Videos

Our main video is a tone poem of the irrepressible. We walk through an edible schoolyard. Imagine. In the heart of Berkeley students have a chance to grow a part of the food they eat. We rejoice with dinosaur kale, rows of tomatoes and the beautiful purple blossoms of climbing beans.

Next, Fully Raw Kristina guides us in preparing a raw vegan, chocolate,pecan pumpkin pie. She starts by making a pecan, mulberry, date crust. The filling is created from cashews, pumpkins seeded and peeled, coconut nectar and coconut water.

Then, the Millennial Gardener exhorts us to keep on growing cucumbers. They fruit quickly; if you plant now you may well have cucumbers second or third week of September.

Dr. William Li emphasizes the power of the body to heal itself. He tells us how eating the right foods can lower the risk of cancer. These include pomegranates, cranberries, and Concord grapes.

We conclude with a video on the Amish way of composting. They have been stewards of the land for centuries. We watch as leafy greens, wood ashes, the rinds of squash and melons and animal manure are transformed into vibrant, enriching compost.
